Ask a Marine who joined the National Guard anything
#76
It worked out for me. Prior other service, also had to get the drug deal MOS school just prior to deployment. Fast forward 15 years, and the next retirement check arrives Friday. Did you know Reserve/Guard retirees get Tricare? 100% medical. No cost! Sweet! Gotta make it to 60, though. Or do equivalent of 20 years AD - 20x365 points.

As someone said before, there's good and bad.

You pretty much have to go into it realizing its not the Marine Corps, so don't try and make it the Marine Corps. You'll just make yourself and everyone else miserable.

For a guy like me who has a wife and a kid, the cheap health insurance makes it worth it until I get to a place where a decent health insurance package is offered.

Also, it is good for getting that moto out of your system every time you start to miss being active.

Ah yes, good point. It is not the Marine Corps. And yes, wishing it was will make you miserable. Find the other Marines, because the Guard is filled with them. Reminisce about the good ol days, but don't think that you'll be the one to whip these Nasty Girls into Marine Corps standards. Take it for what it is, appreciate the good times you will have. In 2.5 years in the guard I've had a few. Most of them have been in the last 6 months since I've moved to a flight company. I get paid to fly in a helicopter and see awesome things. Fly generals around, fly the governor around, do civil aid missions, go to schools and courses, all kinds of stuff. My point is, don't write it off just because it's the National Guard.

Valid points.

On a less serious note, how often do you roll your sleeves? And do you guys have OCP? I've never met a Guardsman with OCP or have seen them with rolled sleeves. Just an observation.

The rolled sleeves are at the commands discretion. Our Adjutant General has said no to sleeve rolling. And lots of guys have OCP. All of the boots are getting it issued in basic I believe. Some have it from deployments, and some have elected to buy it. I'd have bought it myself but it's tough to find the flight uniforms in the new pattern. I can't wait to get rid of this stupid ACU gray.

Lucky! If I get these year long ADOS orders I'll buy myself a set or two.

Unfortunately I don't get the new boots, belt and skivvy shirts so that'll look fucked up, even though its authorized. But I'm a cheap bastard so if the army wants me to wear the new gear, they can issue it to me.

How nice is it to be in an organization that knows the meaning of issue as "to give" as opposed to "make you pay for"?

It's pretty nice. Although in the Marine Corps I never paid for anything that wasn't covered by the clothing allowance.

And one time I just got lucky that right as my boots fell apart we had a Marine that rated a set of steel toe boots wreck a 7 ton and fucked up his legs real bad and he just happened to wear the same size as me. Had a buddy in supply and we both figured the other guy wasn't going to be needing boots anytime soon, so they just gave me those boots.

I'd say the Guard has been good about issuing quality equipment. Of all the gear I've been issued, the only things that weren't brand new was my helmet bag and my monkey strap.

Also, when I enlisted the unit's supply didn't have enough on hand to issue me everything. They drove me to Aberdeen and took me to the uniform shop. They bought me every single uniform item I would have been issued, including dress uniforms. So that was nice that I didn't get thrown random shit while I waited 6 months for a new shipment.

Why would they not allow sleeve rolling?

It was able to be controlled at the major command level but the cos just elaborated and said company level is deciding authority except for unit formations because higher ups were just straight up "nope don't care"

Also, whites out was authorized in the same update.
Mlrs posted about it in the bawks yesterday, check the army enquirer.

Yes I just read that. I was more so wondering what the aversion was to allowing it at all.

I mean I prefer sleeves down personally for comfort but that's just me.

Because Timmy tactical can't get a sunburn! But then the cammies were replaced by frog gear anyway so what was the point? Tradition!

I received my ocp a few weeks ago, but we don't have them in A2CUs yet so in the box they sit.

ConKeeper, you a fellow tango?

For me, everything in this thread is pretty spot on, however, I was enlisted as an 11C as my 0341 was able to be directly transferred over. An 11C waiting in an aviation unit to retrain. Haha that was fun.

Now, I'm a crew chief in a medevac unit so doing much of what ConKeeper does, minus the Air Assault! part. I'm just thankful that we have the money this year due to upcoming fun times to fly as much as we can.

SMK, yeah I'm a Tango! I should have done this 10 years ago lol. What state and unit are you in?

Just found out today I got a slot for Sling Load Inspector Course next month. The useful part of Air Assault without a cool badge...

I'm DE, A co 3/238. We're all A/Ls. I went to tango reclass with a couple soldiers from SD. Pretty sure they were both in a medevac company as well. Can't remember which one though... I know their unit gets tasked with medevac during the Sturgis rally.

Hmm, got a call from a Ssg (no t, yay)today about checking in to my guard unit in october. I'm in kind of a weird boat right now since I'll be with that unit for maybe 3-4 monthes before my ass is heading to OCS to get hazed. Meanwhile, I get to wear a circle on my chest shadowing officers. At least the unit I'm going to has some awesome weapons being Calv scout and even a sniper section

Yeah we just had one of those OCS types. Except he was in his last year of ROTC so he was really boot and us enlisted miscreants could talk shit to him. Now he's commissioned and at flight school I think. So at least you won't be a boot officer candidate.

That's one of the reasons why I don't mind not having a combat patch. People assume I'm a boot sergeant who's never done anything. Then somebody will fill them in that I did 8 years in the Marines with tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's funny watching their attitude change.

Everyone from that unit I've talked to seems pretty laid back , kinda funny I made fun of the Army for 6 years and now I'm all excited about being back. I had such a shitty time dealing with MEPS for the last 4 monthes I'm glad that whole nightmare is over.

I'll message you about that.

Being in the guard has really changed my perspective. Yeah there's lazy assholes, but there's lazy assholes in the cream corn. Yeah there's locked on hard chargers in the cream corn, but there's locked on hard chargers in the nasty guard. I just like the minimal bullshit that comes with (at least) my unit. No huge egos, no major superiority complexes, and when (for example) tents needed to get set up during AT, you better believe every rank from Pvt to Warrants to boot Lts to our commanding Major was sweating their ass off, no complaints, putting in equal effort to get them up. That is not even unheard of in the cream corn. It flat out doesn't happen.

While I loved my time in 2/4 and 2/5, I've found my home in a Blackhawk.

I actually joined the guard this year as well.

I saw my best friend deploy to kuwait, and he called me up and said,

"Dude, I'm going, I just wanted to let you know." And I felt a little dissatisfied with myself, so I joined cause fuck it.

SERIOUSLY, coming from the Marine Corps infantry, HOLY FUCKING SHITBALLS it was a huge culture shock for me. I was not used to the new lifestyle AT ALL.

Everyone has seen pretty fucking chill though, like previously mentioned, no super ego's, no super high rollers that are pretending to be fucking delta, none of that shit. I didn't want to have to deal with the fucking assholes and bullshit that came along with the marine corps, and thats just the guard for you.

I am in an arty unit as a public affairs specialist, and what I've noticed is that these people realize that they have lives outside of the actual military, and they treat it for what its worth. I use to harp on reserve units for being so shitty and fucking disorganized and shit, but the reality is that they are weekend warriors while active duty personnel have a different job to do. It's all relative, whatever.

Apparently two other Marines joined with the same time as me and they had the same thing as me, break of service, but felt they still wanted to serve, and they joined the guard. The culture shock was as big for them as it was for me. Pretty interesting though, think I might do my 20 in the guard, never know -- we'll see.

Hows the meps process work? Just coming off usmc recruiting, i would laugh someone out of the office if they had a medical record like mine.

Does it only matter if you are off AD or do you have to do meps anyways?
