Ask a Marine who joined the National Guard anything
#51
Trust me, it doesn't get much better as an E-6 anyway. People just expect more shit out of you as if performance magically improves beyond 100% by virtue of getting a rocker. Being in the reserves it will probably be worse because you'll be saddled with greater responsibilities that you have to fulfill when you are "off" drill time and you won't be compensated for it in any way. Then again I was an 8411 the whole time I was an E-6 which is like an E-2, so take that for what it's worth. Grab that honorable discharge and keep that shit until you're in the grave. Once a Marine always a Marine, so why reenlist?

Edit: Wait how can you be a previous 5800? I get the 8152, are there C MOSes? Why 5800 and not a particular specialty? Just curious, I've seen Marines on MOL with a big jumble of MOS codes, including BMOSs that are normally PMOSs and I don't know how guys do that.

My only guess would be joined an MP unit as a reservist but then didn't attend the school before moving to an arty unit?

I base this only on Damn's listing the 5800 MOS last, knowing he was a grunt when active, and knowing that he moved a couple of years ago. Basically it's speculation, but that's what I'm going with.

Hopefully you were PME complete. If not, they may try to pooh-pooh your current stripe.
Blackrage managed to get e6 out of his transfer, even with a latmove. Don't be afraid to push for a latmove, I know a few muhweens who were wingers and are now intel in the guard. One was a sergeant and is still a sergeant, the other was a staff select who got out instead of reenlisting because HRST list. That one ended up a specialist for a while.

I doubt you could get in and keep your rank. If you don't have the pme for your grade, they'll bump you down.

Well, technically I do have it, under current regs. But i doubt i go that way, I met a few of the guys in my local guard unit and they looked and acted like meth addicts. I got a strong keystone kops vibe.

Don't be afraid to shop around, I know some folks working the full time gig babbysitting Penn station/JFK/etc still drill with units up in Syracuse because they didn't want to drill locally.
Hell, the PSR tried to court me for 4th LAR up in Syracuse because they needed an armorer.

I hear cook is a clear promotion path, some of those folks who drive clear across the state were joking about promotion being impossible in their MOS and considering lat move.
Guard promotion can be a pain in the dick, because there's no up or out policy. Also anyone working any sort of full time gig is still taking up a billet in a regular unit. And the senior guys are gonna have the most connections for those full time gigs.

I was able to go Guard and keep my rank. However, I have to do BLC before I'm even eligible for I can make the E6 list. Then I have to do all 3 phases of ALC before I can get promoted. Oh, and there has to be an E6 slot for me to promote in to. I'm going to be stuck at Sergeant for a while... Whatever, I've got a cool job.

Same experience here as CK.

Without reading the rest of the thread here are a few bits of advice (based on my experiences) for those interested going into the NG. Feel free to correct any bad gouge.

Deployments while serving in a different branch do not rate a deployment patch.

You will keep your rank

The NG uses a different medical form so your final physical won't count and you will have to go back through the whole MEPs process. Figure out what medical form the NG uses and have your recruiter email you a copy so you can have the navy doc fill it out.

The only MOS that directly transfers into the Army without a waiver is 03xx and that gives you 11B.

I was an 0231 in the MC cross decked to the NG and was told by everyone from my recruiter on up to SGTMAJ and an Admin CWO2 that my MOS would transfer. I showed up to report to pre deployment training and the admin clerk says, "holy shit, you don't have an MOS"  Admin CWO2 makes some calls and sure enough, I'm not qualified to do anything in the national guard. Thankfully for me, I was the only person in the state anywhere close to being qualified being a 35F so they made some drug deals and put me on orders to the school house so I could get MOS Q'd

Finally, a lot of times the full time staff has been full time for a long time so they forget that folks have a life outside the NG.  Don't do a damn thing until they put you on orders. They know where their next paycheck is coming from, but they absolutely don't give a fuck that you've quit your job, dropped out of classes, withdrew job applications etc. to do whatever the guard has asked you to do, they will shrug their shoulders and say "sorry that's just the way it is, thanks for playing" and send you on your way wondering what the fuck you're going to do now.
The other day it dawned on me that Katy Perry did more cool Marine stuff in a three minute long video than I will in my whole career

That's mostly correct. You will be awarded the 11B MOS if you were an 0311. My buddy joined our unit as a former TOW gunner in the MC. He was not awarded an 11 series MOS on a technicality. He explained it to me, but I don't remember exactly. I on the other hand was a 1391 in the MC, and we attend the same school as the Army. In fact the first 2 weeks of school are mixed army and MC. When I came to the guard they ended up awarding me the 92F MOS as a secondary once I reclassed to the job I enlisted for.

As far as deployment patches go, it's kind of a double standard. The reg is clear that they aren't authorized, however I've seen numerous prior Marines wearing MC patches. I've even by asked by many soldiers, including officers as to why I don't wear a Marine patch. I then explain the reg to them and usually they're like oh well I'd still wear it anyway. Most of the time you won't hear anything about it, but I don't want to be the guy who gets lifed by some army SGM or 1SG for wearing one.

I also did not have to go back through MEPS, but the recruiters fucked my paperwork up enough that I slipped through the cracks somehow.

I will cosign the attitudes of most full time guys. Once they get that they're golden so they're pretty much just out for themselves.

A lot of the MOS cross decking stuff is negotiable, "YOU DON'T HAVE AN MOS!" probably means the recruiter ran you as a new join and not PS.
I know a guy who cross decked and didn't get paid for drill because he was being run as UA by what amounts to the poolee holding company, because he was drilling at his actual unit and nobody checked who owned him administratively.

There's a lot of stuff where the creamcorn and army have a disconnect, like a creamcorn 2111 armorer does the whole range from 1st through 5th echelons, but the army has that broken into at least two jobs- 92Y which is some sort of supply and what used to be 45B (they changed it back in 2012 to idfk what). So you could conceivably affiliate with a unit as a 92Y, because pretty much everyone has one, or you could try and find an ordnance maintenance unit that does higher level repairs and just do that.
Blackrage managed to turn 1833 e5 into 11B e6, so ymmv.

My buddies at 1/69 had to get all their shit to the railhead to ship to JRTC this summer, and there were NG motor tuh dudes whose AT was to do the prembark maintenance and inspections on all the vehicles being shipped. So they slept in the barracks on Ft. Drum, and worked normal duty hours, and then got to drink in their off time.

In all honesty it's whatever you want to get out of it. Yes, there are shitty commands and shitty units. There are career skaters and degenerates. But there are great units out there. Being in an aviation unit, everyone takes their jobs seriously, and they're proficient at them. We have to meet the exact same standards as AD army aviation.

There are tons of opportunities in the guard as well. I've been in the guard for almost 3 years and I've been able to do a lot. It's also very easy to lat move and move between units.
